Tes SEN Show 2018: Supporting the entire the SEN community

Since 1992, the Tes SEN Show has been providing valuable insight to empower the SEN community and this year was certainly no exception.

Jack Churchill, CEO and Co-founder of the official Headline Sponsor, Scanning Pens said: “The TES SEN Show 2018 was a big success for Scanning Pens. As a company, we gained very positive traction in existing and new markets. The Mark Allen Group went out of their way to help make our sponsorship very worthwhile.”

The 2018 show saw a total of 42 CPD-certified seminars, each designed to provide expert knowledge on SEN practice, policy and provision to professionals at all levels, as well as the parents and carers of children with SEN.

Visitors attending seminars were able to update their knowledge on vital areas of practice and gain valuable CPD points. The programme covered a range of key areas and this year had a particular focus on social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) as well as statutory guidance for the entire education workforce, with more than half of the sessions directly related to the SEND Code of Practice 2015: 0-25. Beverley Walters, Head of Content at the Tes SEN Show, said: “It was fantastic to see the response to the seminar programme from sold-out seminars before the show, to the excited chatter of networking teachers during breaks between seminars. The atmosphere was electric and I'm thrilled to have played a part in such an important event in the education calendar.”

Alongside the expert guidance found in the seminar programme, visitors also enjoyed a range of free-to-attend sessions.

The opening keynote session returned to the show for a second year after its popularity in 2017. This year, we were joined by speakers including Andre Imich from the DfE as well as mental health and autism professionals. Over 280 people attended the session, which covered mental health and government proposals as well as taking questions from the floor to debate issues at the heart of the attendees’ practice.

Visitors could also discover the Spotlight Theatre, held only on Friday 5 October, which provided the chance for visitors to hear from a range of exhibitors giving informative, 30-minute presentations about their products and services and how they can support practice.

On Saturday 6 October, the Parent and Carer Forum opened to provide a safe space for parents and carers to access support from peers who are not only teachers and trainers but also the parents and carers of children with SEN. Hosted by Carrie Grant, this programme of free sessions discussed parental rights, co-production, autism and the health system.

During the show, the Exhibitor Workshop Theatre provided an opportunity for visitors to gain advice from suppliers about how certain products, services and resources could be used to enhance SEN best practice and support the requirements of learners throughout different educational settings.

The free features were located on a busy show floor, which was packed with over 165 suppliers, charities and organisations keen to speak with visitors about their needs. The wide range of exhibitors demonstrated some of the most innovative and cutting-edge products, services and resources, with some even having exclusive on-stand show offers and competitions. Hayley Hayman, Office Manager at Outreach Tuition said: “It’s been amazing, we’ve had so much networking, really good, fantastic to meet loads of people from all different areas. We wouldn’t be without it – we’re definitely coming next year.”

Matt Govett, Managing Director of MA Exhibitions, said: “We’re proud to be the organisers of such an inspiring event and we’re delighted with how this year’s show has gone. Due to the increasing success of the Tes SEN Show in London, we’re also launching a new show to fulfil and meet the need for greater access to high-quality SEN provision. Join us for Tes SEN North in Manchester on 10-11 May next year, as well as back in London on 4-5 October. We look forward to seeing you there.”
