Literacy improvement from primary to secondary & beyond


Following the SATs results, news articles had raised concerns on reading and writing levels at primary schools. One out of three 11-year-olds in England have failed to meet the expected levels in literacy and numeracy.

In England, far too many children are starting secondary school without the words and the language skills they need to thrive. Recent statistics showed that 1 in 5 children started secondary school without the reading skills expected for their age. For children who come from disadvantaged backgrounds, the numbers were even lower, with 1 in 3 children falling short. This is a gap most children won’t recover from during their years in school, which will result in making them more vulnerable to poverty and unemployment.

To enable children to build up their language and literacy skills from the earliest stage, language, speech, reading and writing should be conceived as one corresponding system. As we all know, words are made up of units of sound, which coincides with Nisai’s high impact low literacy offer, Units of Sound. The programme can be used by anyone from the age of 8 to 80. Units of Sound supports learners with reading, spelling, memory and dictation – starting with three-letter phonetic words and building to adult reading. This resource is a brilliant addition to the Nisai family. It complements the Nisai offer by providing additional literacy support to all our learners.

An ideal literacy solution
With the purpose of improving early language and literacy skills for the thousands of children who start secondary school behind their peers, we present you with this literacy intervention resource. Units of Sound is an ideal crossover solution, being used by many primary schools as part of a wider literacy improvement strategy for SATs and then through to secondary schools as a transitional booster intervention.

Not only can Units of Sound support teachers and pupils with the transition from primary to secondary school, but it can also help education professionals obtain the ability to work with parents on the importance of the home learning environment. The programme provided by Units of Sound helps students and schools to improve their communication, literacy and language skills.

As educators, we are firm believers of flexibility in education: this resource can be used in the community, at home or at school. Once the helper (parent/teacher) carries out the placement exercises to ensure the student is working at a comfortable level, the student can work on their literacy at their own pace with little or no support.
